The performance was fluid, controlled and blistering as Arsenal booked a place in the Champions League semifinals on Saturday night after securing an impressive 1-0 away win at German giants Bayern Munich in the quarterfinal second leg. The Londoners advanced 3-1 on aggregate to condemn the hosts to a fourth straight last-eight exit in European competition. Vivianne Miedema's first-half strike was enough to earn Arsenal the victory and put the Gunners within touching distance of the trophy. The Netherlands striker led the line expertly, holding up the ball and bringing her teammates into play with trademark ease and poise.
Although Bayern dominated possession and created plenty of chances throughout the 90 minutes, Arsenal defended resolutely, with goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger in inspired form between the posts. The German custodian made several stunning saves to keep Bayern at bay, including a miraculous stop to deny Maximiliane Rall from point-blank range in the second half.
Arsenal's victory was particularly impressive given that they were missing several key players, including captain Kim Little and star forward Beth Mead. However, Jonas Eidevall's side showed great resilience and determination to overcome their adversity.
Bayern Munich will be disappointed to have exited the competition at this stage, but they can take solace in the fact that they gave a good account of themselves against one of the best teams in Europe. Arsenal, meanwhile, will be full of confidence heading into the semifinals, where they will face the winner of the tie between Chelsea and Real Madrid.
