FDA Warns of Oyster Recall Due to Campylobacter Outbreak
Alert Issued for Businesses and Consumers
Public Health Concern Raised
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to businesses and consumers to avoid recalled oysters from Recompense Cove, Freeport, Maine. The recall is due to the presence of Campylobacter, a bacteria that can cause serious infections.
On December 18, 2023, the Utah Shellfish Authority notified the FDA of two cases of Campylobacter linked to consuming oysters from British. The FDA is investigating the outbreak and advising businesses to stop selling and serving recalled oysters.
Campylobacter is a common cause of bacterial diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration, abdominal pain, and fever. In severe cases, Campylobacter can spread to other parts of the body, including the bloodstream.
Consumers who have purchased recalled oysters should not eat them. They should return the oysters to the retailer or discard them immediately.
